Student Shadow Program a Huge Success
Taos High School Students “shadowed” Holy Cross Health Professionals in various departments within the hospital including: Radiology; Medical Surgery; Labor and Delivery; the Emergency Department; and the Advanced Care Unit.
Holy Cross Hospital partnered with Taos Municipal Schools, Taos Academy, Penasco and Questa Independent Schools.
In the last five years over 130 students throughout Taos County have participated in the job shadow program. As the largest employer in Taos County, we recognize our role to introduce young people to careers in the health care fields. We have good benefits, professional development opportunities and one can work anywhere in the world! Additionally, Taos Health Systems offers education loans for those students wishing to pursue a career in health care. This is an initiative to ‘grow our own’ by providing financial support for those looking for great job opportunities close to home in the health care fields.
“This program has allowed students to understand that there is much more than nurses and doctors. They now understand that Information Technology, Human Resources, Marketing and Advertising are all a part of the health care world. It is an important step in creating a pathway for the young ones to follow,” stated Gayle Martinez, Human Resource Specialist and organizer of the program.
The future looks bright for health care. These partnerships are just the beginning. Holy Cross looks to expand their partnerships with the local schools and universities in the future. The expansion of UNM’s campus will allow for more dual credit hours for the kids while they are still in high school. This will shorten the path to a health care career, not just a job.
