Ways To Give

You can write a check or charge your gift using our Give Now online donation form. You can transfer assets such as stocks, bonds, and property. Or perhaps you wish to create an endowment or other legacy gift or even join one of our giving societies by virtue of the type and size of gift.

Making a planned gift may allow you to give more than you ever thought possible and, at the same time, benefit from tax advantages or income for life. Planned or deferred gift options include bequests from your will, annuities, trusts and other financial instruments.

Your support provides a level of flexibility that is necessary for innovation and consistent quality of care to thrive.  As a donor, you may designate your gift for a specific purpose or program, or you may allow us to allocate your donation to the areas most in need.

Taos Health’s Gift Office welcomes the opportunity to assist you and your financial and legal advisors. We also work closely with Taos Community Foundation regarding planned gifts.  Together, we will provide the information you need to select a giving option in keeping with your philanthropic and financial goals.

What will be your legacy? How would you like to give?

  • Gifts Anyone Can Make

Did you know there are ways to support Taos Health Systems that don’t affect your current lifestyle or your family’s financial security?

    • You can make a gift that costs you nothing during your lifetime
    • You can make a gift that leaves your cash flow and current financial planning unchanged
    • You don't have to use cash to make your gift: you can "buy low and give high" by making your gift with appreciated securities instead
    • You can gift an asset you no longer need or want

Below are some ideas for you to consider and discuss with your financial advisor.

    • Gifts of Stock or Other Securities

A security is any equity or debt instrument that it readily salable and can be converted into cash, or exchanged with ease.  Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, short-term commercial paper and certificates of deposit are all considered marketable securities because there is a public demand for them and because they can be readily converted into cash.  Shares of IBM and government bonds are excellent examples of marketable securities.

A gift to Taos Health Systems of appreciated securities held for more than one year may provide significant benefits to you as a contributor, such as:

      • Entitling you to a charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the gifted securities as of the date of gift.
      • Eliminating capital gains tax that would ordinarily become due if you had sold the appreciated securities on the open market and donated the proceeds from the sale to charity.
      • Claiming your charitable deduction against up to 30% of your adjusted gross income. Any unused deductions can be carried forward over the next five years.
      • Providing a way to help you to achieve your long-term financial objective of reducing your income and estate taxes.

If you have securities that have declined in value over the years and are interested in donating them to charity, you may find it more advantageous to sell the securities first and contribute the proceeds to charity as opposed to donating the securities outright. This strategy should allow you to claim a deduction for both the loss from the sale of the securities as well as the charitable gift.

If you are considering donating stock that is subject to a cash merger or tender offer, it's important for you to note that you will be subject to tax on the capital gain even though the shares were transferred to us before the tender offer became effective.

You should always consult with your financial advisor before initiating a charitable gift arrangement.

Gifts of appreciated securities could provide even greater benefits to you through Planned Giving.

If you are interested in providing Taos Health Systems with an outright gift of appreciated securities, please contact the Gift Office at (575) 751-8963 to discuss how best to make the asset transfer.

    • Gifts of Real Estate

Make an extraordinary gift and transfer the burden and expense of managing the property while you remove a large asset from your taxable estate.

We are happy to consider gifts of residential, commercial and undeveloped real estate.

You can donate real estate in several ways:

      • As an outright donation;
      • As the donation of a fractional interest in the property;
      • As the asset to fund a gift plan that will pay you income, such as a charitable unitrust;
      • By donating your home, while at the same time reserving the right to continue living there for your lifetime or for the lifetime of someone else such as a spouse or sibling (a retained life estate).

As with donations of other types of appreciated property, gifts of real estate secure a charitable income-tax deduction for you, based on the fair market value of the property. There is no capital gains liability to you for the transfer to Taos Health Systems.

      How It Works

      • You deed your home, vacation home, undeveloped property or a commercial building to Taos Health Systems.
      • Taos Health Systems may use the property for its own purposes or may sell it and use the proceeds.

      Benefits

      • You receive an income tax deduction for the fair market value of the real estate at the time of the transfer.
      • You pay no capital gains tax on the transfer.
      • You can direct the proceeds from your gift to a specific program at Taos Health Systems.
    • Gifts from Your Will or Trust

You can give to Taos Health System without affecting your cashflow during your lifetime.

By naming Taos Health Systems as a beneficiary in your will, trust, retirement plan or insurance policy,  your philanthropy helps secure our future.  It's important for us to know your desires as well, so please contact us early in your planning!  We want to not only show our appreciation for your generosity, keep you informed of growth in the organization and how your philanthropy may be used.  We also would like to include you in the Mable Dodge Luhan Legacy Society for your legacy gift.

It is very easy to add Taos Health Systems as a beneficiary to your will or trust.  Here is sample language for your bequest:

"I give, devise, and bequeath (specific gift; i.e.: dollar amount, percentage of estate, or rest and residue of estate) to Taos Health Systems, Inc. a 501(c)3 organization located in Taos, New Mexico. The organization’s tax ID number (or EIN) is 85-0289839."

Advantages to making this kind of gift:

      • Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime.
      • You can modify your bequest to address changing circumstances.
      • You can direct your bequest to a particular purpose (be sure to check with us to make sure your gift can be used as intended).
      • Under current tax law, there is no upper limit on the estate tax deduction for your charitable bequests.
    • Gifts of Cash

Making a gift of cash by check or credit card is the most convenient and immediate way to give to Taos Health Systems. These gifts may be unrestricted or designated for a specific purpose. You can click through to our online, secure giving pages at Give Now, where you’ll find a variety of ways to donate quickly and easily and in a way that reflects your interests and desires.

If you have any questions, please contact the Gift Office at (575) 751-8963 or IVandever@taoshospital.org.

To make a gift by check you may send the Mail-In Gift Form along with your check to:

    • Gifts from Your Retirement Plan or Insurance

The balance of your retirement or insurance may be worth more when donated to Taos Health Systems than to your heirs.

      How it Works

      • Name Taos Health Systems as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k) or other qualified plan
      • Designate us to receive all or a portion of the balance of your plan through your plan administrator.
      • The balance in your plan passes to Taos Health Systems upon your death

      Benefits

      • Continue to take regular lifetime withdrawals
      • You can revoke us as a beneficiary if your family's needs change

Gifts of Life Insurance - Paid-Up Policy
      How it Works

      • You transfer ownership of a paid-up life insurance policy to Taos Health Systems.
      •  Taos Health Systems cashes in the policy now or maintains it and receives the death benefit later.

      Benefits

      • You receive gift credit and an immediate income tax deduction for the cash surrender value of the policy.
      • In some cases, you can use the cash value in your policy to fund a life-income gift, such as a deferred gift annuity.
      • You gain the satisfaction of making a significant gift to Taos Health Systems without adversely affecting your cash flow.

For more information, please contact the Gift Office at (575) 751-8963 or IVandever@taoshospital.org.

Taos Health Systems, Inc. is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit charitable organization. All donations are tax deductible or may provide other significant tax advantages. Please consult your tax and legal counsel for advice on the giving method best suited for you.

    • Gifts of Personal Property

Tangible personal property is one of the most interesting types of donations to charity because of its infinate varieties and how it's collected.   Broadly defined by the IRS, tangible personal property is "any property, other than land or buildings that can be seen or tourched.  It includes artworks; jewelry & gems; coins; boats & aircraft; and timber."   The list of possibilities is almost endless.

The value to Taos Health Systems, or any other charity, is that a personal property donation my be valuable to maintain in tact, such as our art collection (composed of paintings, sculpture & collectibles) or it may be sold for financial gain to benefit the organization.  Our collection - all of which has been donated and continues to grow - provides a great aesthetic for the hospital patients, visitors and staff and will soon be included in a therapeutic program, as well.

Because of the often personal nature of such gifts, please contact our Gift Office to discuss your donation. We can be reached at (575) 751-8963 or at IVandever@taoshospital.org.

  • Gifts That Can Pay You Income

Gifts that pay lifetime income have many benefits: dependable income for you and your family, current and future tax savings, and a means to support Taos Health Systems.  Whether you are planning for retirement, the educational expenses of children or grandchildren, or the care of loved ones, life income gifts are an excellent way to balance many personal and philanthropic goals.

Below are some instuments you should discuss with your financial advisor.

    • Charitable Gift Annuity - Immediate

Of all the gifts that pay you back, the charitable gift annuity is the simplest, most affordable, and most popular. You make a gift to Taos Health Systems, and, in return, we agree to make fixed payments to you for life. The gift agreement is a simple contract between you and THS. Your payments become one of our general obligations, fully backed by all our assets, and will not fluctuate.

At your death, we apply the balance of the gift annuity to the school, division or program you designated when you made your gift.

      How It Works

      • You transfer a minimum of $10,000 in cash or securities to Taos Health Systems.
      • Taos Health Systems pays up to two beneficiaries (including you, if you wish) fixed income for life.
      • Beneficiaries must be at least 60 at the time that payments are to be received.
      • The remaining balance passes to Taos Health Systems when the contract ends at the death of the last beneficiary.

      Benefits

      • Receive dependable, fixed income for life in return for your gift.
      • In many cases, increase the yield you are currently receiving from stocks or CDs.
      • Receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of your gift.
      • A portion of your annuity payment will be tax free.

Your charitable gift annuity can start payments once you have made your contribution (an immediate payment gift annuity), or payments can begin at a later date selected by you (a deferred payment gift annuity). Deferral entitles you to a higher annuity rate and generates a larger charitable deduction.

Donors can create a series of deferred gift annuities over multiple years, jointly timed to begin making payments to supplement retirement income. Their deferred gift annuities give them a current income tax deduction and an additional source of cash during their retirement years.

    • Charitable Gift Annuity - Deferred

This version of the charitable gift annuity is especially designed for younger donors. Called the deferred gift annuity, it makes fixed annual payments to you and/or another beneficiary for life, with payments commencing at a future date. Because of the deferral of income:

      • Taos Health Systems can offer a higher income rate for these annuities than for annuities whose income starts immediately, and
      • You may receive a larger charitable income tax deduction than you could get from any other life-income gift plan.

These two features make the deferred gift annuity quite attractive to donors in high-earnings years who are concerned about securing both current tax deductions and additional sources of retirement income.

      How It Works

      • You transfer a minimum of $10,000 in cash or securities to Taos Health Systems.
      • Beginning on a specified date in the future, Taos Health Systems begins to pay you, or up to two annuitants you name, fixed annuity payments for life.
      • Beneficiaries must be at least 60 to begin receiving payments.
      • The remaining balance passes to Taos Health Systems when the contract ends.

      Benefits

      • Deferral of payments permits a higher annuity rate and generates a larger charitable deduction.
      • You can target your annuity payments to begin when you need them, such as retirement or when a grandchild needs help with tuition payments.
      • The longer you defer payments, the higher the effective rate you will receive.
    • Charitable Remainder Unitrust

A charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT) is a separately invested and managed charitable trust that pays a percentage of its principal, re-valued annually, to you and/or other income beneficiaries you name for life or a term of years (up to a maximum of 20). You receive a charitable income tax deduction for a portion of the value of the assets you place in the trust. After the unitrust terminates, the balance or "remainder interest" goes to Taos Health Systems to be used as you designate.

      How It Works

      • You transfer a minimum of $100,000 in cash, securities or other appreciated property into a trust.
      • The trust pays a percentage of the value of its principal, which is valued annually, to you or beneficiary(ies) you name.
      • When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to Taos Health Systems to be used as you have directed.

      Benefits

      • Receive income for life or a term of years in return for your gift.
      • Receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of your contribution.
      • Pay no upfront capital gains tax on appreciated assets you donate.
      • You can make additional gifts to the trust as your circumstances allow for additional income and tax benefits.
    • Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust

A great way to make a gift, receive fixed payments and defer or eliminate gains tax. It provides a steady cash flow and can be more beneficial than keeping an asset or selling it outright.

A charitable remainder annuity trust (CRAT) is a separately invested and managed charitable trust that pays you, and/or other beneficiaries, a fixed annuity for life or for a term of years (up to 20). You receive a charitable income tax deduction for a portion of the value of the assets you place in the trust. By law no additional gifts to the trust are permitted once the trust is initially funded. After the annuity trust terminates, the balance or "remainder interest" goes to Taos Health Systems to be used as you designate.

      How It Works

      • You transfer a minimum of $100,000 in cash, securities or other appreciated property into a trust.
      • The trust makes fixed annual payments to you or to beneficiaries you name.

      • Your trust can meet personal or family needs that are tied to a specific timeframe, such as tuition payments
    • Charitable Bargain Sale

This part-gift/part-sale provides you with a charitable deduction plus cash.

With the charitable bargain sale you sell real estate or other marketable property to Taos Health Systems at less than fair market value.  The transaction gives you cash that you can use, plus a charitable income tax deduction for the discount you take from the market value.

We mutually agree on the purchase price for your property, and on whether we will pay you in a lump sum or through an installment note.

The bargain sale is the only gift plan that can give you both:

      • a lump sum of cash, and
      • a charitable deduction.

      How It Works

      • You sell your residence or other property to Taos Health Systems for a price below the appraised market value — a transaction that is part charitable gift and part sale.
      • Taos Health Systems may use the property, or sell it and use the proceeds of the sale for the gift purposes you specified.

      Benefits

      • You receive an immediate income tax deduction for the discount you take from the appraised market value of your property.
      • You pay no capital gains tax on the donated portion of the property.
      • You can receive payment from us in a lump sum, or in fixed installments.

  • Gifts That Protect Your Assets

Increased income may not be your primary objective. Instead, you may be wondering how you will deal with some highly appreciated property or a growing family business as your needs and lifestyle change. Will taxes consume much of the value that you have worked so hard to grow? Will anything be left for you and your family?

We have several options that help you meet your personal planning goals, save taxes, and make a gift to Taos Health Systems at the same time.  Working with Taos Community Foundation, we can show you creative ways to use your assets to benefit Taos Health Systems, while at the same time preserving the benefits of those assets for yourself and your family.

Please discuss these options with your financial advisor and then contact us at 575.751.5711 or email us at Giving@TaosHospital.org.

    • Testamentary Life-Income Gifts

Often times, people want to make a significant gift to Taos Health Systems through their estate plan, but may have concerns about providing for survivors. You can fund a life income plan, such as a charitable remainder trust or gift annuity through your estate.  You may include language in your will that directs a gift to Taos Health Systems by establishing a plan that will make payments to named beneficiaries such as your spouse, family members or friends.  When the payments end, the remaining assets will be used by Taos Health Systems to support the program you designate.  A portion of your gift will generate a charitable estate tax deduction.

      How It Works

      • You write a will or revocable trust directing a bequest to Taos Health Systems.
      • You provide that the bequest first create a life income gift benefiting your designated recipients.
      • After their income interest terminates, the remaining balance in the gift passes to Taos Health Systems to be applied to the purposes you specify.

      Benefits

      • One estate asset can benefit both Taos Health Systems and your heirs or other desired beneficiaries.
      • Your estate will be eligible to claim a charitable deduction for a portion of the amount of your bequest.
      • You can modify your bequest if your circumstances change.

    • Charitable Lead Trust

The charitable lead trust pays income to Taos Health Systems now, while reducing your tax costs for transferring assets to your heirs. The lead trust holds appreciating assets for your lifetime or for a term of years, and pays annual income to us. Taos Health Systems benefits from the assured income stream from the lead trust, while your family enjoys several tax advantages:

      • The gift assets placed in the lead trust are frozen in value for transfer-tax purposes as of the date the trust is formed. When the trust terminates and the assets pass to your family, all intervening appreciation will escape gift and estate taxes.
      • Our income interest further reduces the taxable value of the trust assets when they pass to your family. This feature makes the lead trust especially useful if you are holding assets likely to appreciate significantly before they are transferred to the next generation.

      How it Works

      • You contribute securities or other appreciated assets to a charitable lead trust.
      • The trust makes fixed annual payments to Johns Hopkins for a period of time.
      • When the trust terminates, the remaining principal is paid to your heirs.

      Benefits

      • Income payments to us for a term reduce the ultimate tax cost of transferring an asset to your heirs.
      • The amount and term of the payments to Johns Hopkins can be set so as to reduce or even eliminate transfer taxes due when the principal reverts to your heirs.
      • All appreciation that takes place in the trust goes tax free to the individual(s) named in your trust.

    • Donor Advised Fund

Donor-advised funds are flexible giving tools created by individuals, families, and businesses who wish to actively participate in the grantmaking process.

Working with the Taos Community Foundation, you can establish a donor-advised fund quickly and easily with a short fund agreement and a single gift. You can then recommend grants from your fund to various projects within Taos Health Systems or even to other organizations you wish to support. It is easy to give to multiple projects through a donor-advised fund.

Donor-advised funds are particularly useful for families or individuals who have broad charitable interests but may have a one-time tax or income event that necessitates a large gift that can then be used to fundTaos Health Systems activities over a number of years.

When opening a donor advised fund, there are five basic decisions you will need to make:

      • A name for your fund
      • Whether or not to endow your fund (endowed funds last into perpetuity)
      • Who will serve on your advisory committee if there is more than one person involved
      • How long you want the fund to last
      • How you would like your fund invested

For more information please contact our Gift Office at (575) 751-8963.

    • Retained Life Estate

A retained life estate allows you to literally “live in your gift.”

How Does a Retained Life Estate gift work?

      1. Transfer your residence or vacation home to Taos Health Systems but retain a life estate.
      2. Continue to live there for life or for a specified term while continuing to be responsible for all taxes and maintenance.
      3. The property then passes to Taos Health Systems when your life estate ends.

Retained Life Estates - Benefits to You

      • You receive credit for the donation and an income tax deduction for a portion of the appraised value of the property.
      • You can terminate your life estate at any time and take an additional income tax deduction.
      • You get the immediate gratification of making a significant gift that benefits you now and Taos Health Systems.

For more information, please discuss this with your financial advisor and contact our Gift Office at (575) 751-8963.

      • You pay no capital gains tax on the donated portion of the property.
      • You can receive payment from us in a lump sum, or in fixed installments.

  • Gifts of Sponsorships & Grants

In addition to individual donors, sponsorships and grant funding from corporations and foundations provide significant support for our special care of patients and families, as well as for community education programs, such as Kids First and Taos Loves Kids.

Corporations can support Taos Health Systems in many ways, including matching gifts and sponsorship participation in our annual “For the Health of It!” 5k/10k run to help underwrite Taos Cancer Support Services and other events for patients. They can also provide general support for Holy Cross Hospital and our other health services, as well as underwriting capital improvements, such as new equipment.

Grant support from foundations helps Taos Health Systems with existing community wellness programs or develop new ones, as well as explore better ways of providing health services to our culturally and geographically diverse community.

We are grateful to all the foundations and corporations that have recognized the importance of our unique and historic mission, and that provide funding to help us continue to care for the patients and families who turn to us at a difficult time in their lives. It’s a true investment in this remarkable community.

For more information about foundation and corporate giving, please call our Gift Office at 575.751.5711 or Giving@TaosHospital.org.

    • More about Corporate Matching Gifts

You can double or further multiply the impact of a gift if you are an employee, retiree or director of a corporation that matches gifts to qualified institutions. Check with your company’s HR department to see if a Matching Gift program is available to you and also see if Taos Health Systems or Holy Cross Hospital is listed.

If we are not listed, then please contact our Gift Office immediately at (575) 751-8963 or by emailing IVandever@taoshospital.org so we can work with your HR department to maximize your donation.
